Oscillators

Variousoscillatoroptionsoffertheuserawiderangeoffunctionsaccordingtotheirvarious

applicationrequirements.Theflexiblefeaturesoftheoscillatorfunctionsensurethatthebest

optimisationcanbeachievedintermsofspeedandpowersaving.Oscillatorselectionsandoperation

areselectedthroughregisters.

Oscillator Overview

Inadditiontobeingthesourceofthemainsystemclocktheoscillatorsalsoprovideclocksources

fortheWatchdogTimerandTimeBaseInterrupts.Twofullyintegratedinternaloscillators,requiring

noexternalcomponents,areprovidedtoformawiderangeofbothfastandslowsystemoscillators.

Thehigherfrequencyoscillatorprovideshigherperformancebutcarrywithitthedisadvantageof

higherpowerrequirements,whiletheoppositeisofcoursetrueforthelowerfrequencyoscillator.

Withthecapabilityofdynamicallyswitchingbetweenfastandslowsystemclock,thesedevices

havetheflexibilitytooptimizetheperformance/powerratio,afeatureespeciallyimportantinpower

sensitiveportableapplications.

systemoscillatorisimplementedusingtheHLCLKbitandCKS2~CKS0bitsintheSMODregister

andasthesystemclockcanbedynamicallyselected.

System Clock Configurations

Internal RC Oscillator – HIRC

TheinternalRCoscillatorisafullyintegratedsystemoscillatorrequiringnoexternalcomponents.

The internal RC oscillator has a fixed frequency of 8MHz. Device trimming during the

manufacturingprocessandtheinclusionofinternalfrequencycompensationcircuitsareusedto

ensurethattheinfluenceofthepowersupplyvoltage,temperatureandprocessvariationsonthe

oscillationfrequencyareminimised.Asaresult,atapowersupplyof5Vandattemperatureof25°C

degrees,thefixedoscillationfrequencyoftheHIRCwillhaveatolerancewithin2%.
