Oscillators and Operating Modes

Twointernaloscillatorsareprovided,onelowspeedandonehighspeed.Botharefullyintegrated

andrequirenoexternalcomponentsfortheiroperation.

Internal High Speed Oscillator – HIRC

TheinternalRCoscillatorisafullyintegratedsystemoscillatorrequiringnoexternalcomponents.

TheinternalRCoscillatorhasafixedfrequencyof16MHz.Devicetrimmingduringthe

manufacturingprocessandtheinclusionofinternalfrequencycompensationcircuitsareusedto

ensurethattheinfluenceofthepowersupplyvoltage,temperatureandprocessvariationsonthe

oscillationfrequencyareminimized.Asaresult,atapowersupplyof5Vandatatemperaturefrom

-20~60°C degrees,thefixedoscillationfrequency16MHzwillhaveatolerancewithin2%asit

requiresnoexternalpinsforitsoperation.

Internal Low Speed Oscillator – LIRC

TheLIRCisafullyself-containedfreerunningon-chipRCoscillatorusedastheperipheralfunction

clocksourcewithatypicalfrequencyof32kHzat5Vrequiringnoexternalcomponents.Whenthe

devicesentertheSLEEP0/SLEEP1Mode,thesystemclockwillstoprunningbuttheWDToscillator

continuestofree-runandtokeepthewatchdogactive.

System Operation Modes

Therearetwodifferentmodesforthemicrocontroller,eachonewithitsownspecialcharacteristicsand

whichcanbechosenaccordingtothespecificperformanceandpowerrequirementsoftheapplication.

Thereisonemodeallowingnormaloperationofthemicrocontroller,theNORMALMode.Theother

mode,theSLEEPMode,isusedwhenthemicrocontrollerCPUisswitchedofftoconservepower.

Asthenamesuggeststhisisoneofthemainoperatingmodeswherethemicrocontrollerhasallof

itsfunctionsoperationalandwherethesystemclockisprovidedbytheHIRCoscillator.

SLEEP Mode

TheSLEEPModeisenteredwhenanHALTinstructionisexecuted.IntheSLEEPmodetheCPU

willbestopped.However,theLIRCclockwillcontinuetooperatesincetheWatchdogTimer

functionisalwaysenabled.

Entering the SLEEP Mode

ThereisonlyonewayforthedevicestoentertheSLEEPModeandthatistoexecutethe"HALT"

instructionintheapplicationprogramandtheWDTon.Whenthisinstructionisexecutedunderthe

conditionsdescribedabove,thefollowingwilloccur:

• Thesystemclockwillbestoppedandtheapplicationprogramwillstopatthe"HALT"

instruction,buttheWDTwillremainwiththeclocksourcecomingfromtheLIRCclock.

• TheDataMemorycontentsandregisterswillmaintaintheirpresentcondition.

• TheWDTwillbeclearedandresumecountingastheWDTisenabled.

• TheI/Oportswillmaintaintheirpresentconditions.

• Inthestatusregister,thePowerDownflag,PDF,willbesetandtheWatchdogtime-outflag,TO,

willbecleared.
