¿Qué es EPROM

En los componentes electrónicos, 'EPROM' es una abreviatura de 'memoria de solo lectura programable borrable', un término que se refiere a la memoria de solo lectura programable que se puede borrar. EPROM es una memoria de solo lectura en la que los datos se pueden almacenar y leer, pero el usuario no puede programar o modificar los datos.

EPROM se utiliza para almacenar permanentemente la información digital y retiene esa información incluso cuando los datos están apagados. Debido a estas características, EPROM es útil para almacenar cargadores de arranque, código de inicialización, firmware, etc.

Sin embargo, para corregir los datos una vez registrados, el EPROM debe borrarse físicamente y reprogramarse con nuevos datos. La desventaja de esta característica de EPROM es su inflexibilidad. Para superar estos inconvenientes, se han desarrollado recuerdos de borrado eléctricamente como la memoria de solo lectura programable eléctricamente borrable (EEPROM) y los recuerdos flash.

EPROM es una tecnología más antigua, con mayores capacidades y velocidades de borrado/programa más rápidas, como EEPROM y Memoria Flash, que se utiliza más recientemente. Sin embargo, las EPROM se pueden usar en algunos sistemas heredados o en ciertas aplicaciones.
